get the most out of your skincare with these small changes

When it comes to discovering your perfect skincare routine, you might think that everyone is different. But while of course there will be some subtle differences depending on your skin type, age and skin condition, most of the essential advice that will really revolutionise your face is the same all round. The key is in that little word: care.

Whatever skin you’re in, it’s your first line of defence, protecting you from a wide variety of pollutants flying around in the outside world. When properly supported, it does its job beautifully. In a nutshell, its healthy and as a result, you’ll be left with that smooth, blemish-free, even-toned, glowing look we’re all striving for.

Here at nabino, we’re all for helping your body do what it does best, naturally. So, here are a few tips on how you can do that within your skincare routine, for the complexion you’ve always dreamed of.

Layer your skincare

You don’t need a cabinet full of products to create the dream skincare routine, but there are a few essentials and those need to be layered in the right way for them all to do their job properly. If you don’t do this already, you’re about to have your regime revolutionised!

The order goes like this: Cleanser, toner, serum, eye cream, moisturiser, face oil.

Your skin needs to be clean before layering products on, so freshen up with your favourite cleanser (no face wipes allowed. We’re not 14 anymore!). Follow with toner, not to tighten pores (that’s a myth) but to prime and remove any residue cleanser. Serums are basically concentrated nutrients and make a massive difference to your overall skin health, so these go on before the rest. Next, eye cream, which is lighter than other products so won’t benefit from having to work its way through them. Moisturiser goes on next, to create an essential barrier on your skin and contains all that goodness inside. And finally, face oil to lock in, hydrate, soothe and protect. Nothing penetrates oil.

The Beauty of Balance

Almost every skincare woe stems from your skin being out of balance and where many of us go wrong is trying to tackle the wrong problem or exacerbating the issue by accident.

For example, if your skin is oily you might be tempted to reach for products designed to soak up excess sebum (natural oils) and avoid any form of moisturiser or face oil altogether. But this is a recipe for disaster, as your body, feeling as though it is now lacking, will start to produce more oil to compensate. The same goes for dry skin – if you slather moisturising products on to dry skin, your body may feel as though it has produced enough (or even too much!) therefore making your skin dryer in the long run.

It’s a sensitive business, but really all it comes down to is balance. You want to regulate your skin and train it back to its best, natural state in as gentle a way as possible.

Products made from natural ingredients are generally better at doing this, as they support your skin in doing its thing, rather than trying to ‘fix’ a problem. CBD, in particular, works pure magic on getting skin back into balance – read more about that on our CBD and Skincare page.

Exfoliation is key

On average, we all lose around 50 million skin cells a day, and these won’t simply wash off with cleanser and water. They will stay sitting on the surface, making skin look dull and dry. The only way to slew these away and allow fresh cells to shine through while boosting circulation (for that healthy glow we’re all after) is to exfoliate. Two to three times a week for most skin types, or once a week if your skin is very sensitive. And as an added bonus, your other skin care products (and makeup) will be much more effective on exfoliated skin.

But, don’t be fooled into thinking exfoliating means scrubbing hard. It doesn’t. In fact, being too rough can be quite damaging to the delicate skin on your face.

How you exfoliate depends on the type of exfoliator you use. There are physical exfoliants (face scrubs and clay masks) and chemical exfoliants, formulated with BHAs and AHAs (acid serums and peels) and which you choose is really just a matter of personal preference.

For physical exfoliators: take a 10 pence-size amount and gently massaging in a circular motion for 30 seconds to a minute, avoiding the eye area. Rinse, then pat dry.

For chemical exfoliators: wash your face first then apply the serum or peel all over your face and neck. Leave for a few minutes (or as instructed) – no need to scrub. Rinse thoroughly.

There are two natural ingredients that we think really stand out from the skincare crowd: CBD and hemp oil. Find out why the cannabis plant is so incredible for your skin on our Hemp & Skincare page. And once you’ve been wowed our shop, laden with the world’s best CBD skincare, is waiting!
