If you’ve ever experienced any form of chronic pain, you’ll know exactly how distressing it can be. Pain that is unrelenting, has several adverse physiological and psychological effects on sufferers. Mentally, people with chronic conditions such as arthritis, are often depressed, anxious and battle with brain fog.

A recent report by Science Daily also states that constant pain interferes with the health of your brain, by changing the behaviour of the front region associated with emotion. Pain causes sufferers’ emotions to stay highly sensitized, “wearing out neurons and altering their connections.”

Unfortunately, as many chronic pain sufferers are aware, pharmaceutical solutions come with a long list of side-effects. From weight-gain, compromised awareness, liver damage and even addiction, the wide spectrum of contraindications that comes with any painkilling drug makes long-term use of them, an unappealing prospect.

Can CBD help?

While there are not enough clinical studies currently available to conclusively prove CBD helps alleviate pain, those that have been carried out show encouraging results. Not only that, but anecdotal evidence of chronic pain sufferers shows CBD has been able to provide significant relief for several conditions.

CBD oil is particularly promising due to its lack of intoxicating effects compared to other pain relief treatments.

Dr Adie Rae, a California-based expert in therapeutic uses of CBD, was recently quoted as saying; “There are many kinds of joint pain, but one of the most common sources of pain is arthritis. Both rheumatoid and osteoarthritis patients report using topical CBD oil to manage their symptoms. The true efficacy of these products has not been studied in clinical trials, but in animal models of arthritis, topical CBD effectively reduces pain and inflammation.”

Below is a list of conditions where anecdotally, CBD has been found useful in managing the pain.

  • Arthritis or joint pain
  • Migraine
  • Cluster and other headaches
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)

How to take CBD

CBD comes in many different forms and preparations. You can ingest it, either in jellies, food, drops or beverages.  You can also use it topically, in an easy to apply balm or lotion. Some people even choose to inhale it. How you decide to take CBD, depends on what sorts of pain you are trying to manage. It’s advisable to try several methods – or even combine them, until you find what works for you.

By mouth

CBD that is taken orally, is absorbed through the digestive tract. Absorption is slow and there is a delayed onset of effect – usually one to two hours. Stomach acid, recent meals, and your personal absorption rate, makes it difficult to ascertain exactly how much CBD each person utilises from each dose.

We recommend:

Cannaray 450mg CBD & Curcumin Capsules Enjoy the combined benefits of both CBD and natural anti-inflammatory, curcumin, with these capsules from Cannaray. Ideal for those suffering from aching muscles and joints, these capsules get to work to tackle the discomfort associated with a number of ailments. Each capsule is packed with 15mg of CBD as well as 50mg of soothing curcumin. Take two a day or whenever you feel you need relief.

By drops

A faster way to absorb CBD is directly into the bloodstream. You do this by using a spray or drops (placed under the tongue and left for up to 120 seconds).

We recommend:

Aire 010 1000mg CBD oil 10ml Aire’s mid-strength blend CBD oil, Aire 010, contains 1000mg, making it perfect for bringing you balance every day. Free from all artificial preservatives and containing only pure organic hemp-derived CBD, simply drop some under your tongue whenever you need to take the edge off.

CBD lotions and balms can be applied to the skin over a painful joint or muscle. Exactly how effective these products are is clinically unknown – although anecdotal evidence suggests CBD has excellent anti-inflammatory properties and they have proved popular with consumers.

We recommend:

Grass & Co Calm 300mg CBD Balm 60ml Grass & Co’s CBD-infused calm balm contains 300mg CBD oil. Combined with a soothing blend of evening primrose oil, rosemary, and basil, the ingredients work together to calm tension and soothe aching joints. Gentle enough for sensitive skin, massage it into pulse points, or directly onto tense, sore muscles.

Be safe

Ultimately, when you suffer from chronic pain, it’s vital that you use the best resources available to you, to help manage it. Since long-term pain can result in depression, poor sleep, and anxiety, as well as discomfort, you must, first and foremost, take care of your mental health by taking steps to adequately manage your pain. It’s advisable to seek advise from your physician regarding the use of CBD – especially if you have any concerns about taking it along with your usual medication.

However, if you decide CBD is for you, start off small, around 10-20mg doses in the morning and evening. Try different types of CBD products too; what works well for one person, may not be as affective for you. It might take you a little while to find the delivery method that works best. Finally, take it one step at a time. Listen to your body so that you can gradually reach the optimum dose for you.
